Vitamin D 🌻: Everything You Need to Know

- The best way to get enough Vitamin D is taking a supplement. There are very few foods that naturally contain Vitamin D, so the best way to work it into your diet is taking those Vitamin pills daily!
- The sun! Like we said, our bodies produce that Vitamin D naturally as it is exposed to sunlight. Regular exposure to the sun is the most natural way to get enough Vitamin D, so we recommend getting 30 minutes of midday sunlight several times each week. Those with darker skin may need a little more than this, since higher amounts of melanin mean less Vitamin D the skin can absorb. If we had our way, we’d all be outside all day, everyday {and with enough sunscreen to stay safe}!
- We did say that very few foods naturally contain Vitamin D, but we can still eat those few foods! Fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon are the number one foods that provide Vitamin D, which is good news for our sushi fans! Other foods that are fortified by Vitamin D are orange juice, soy milk, cheese, and other dairy products. Last but not least, egg yolks are one of the few foods that will help us get Vitamin D into our wonderful bodies.
- Vitamin D is critical for building bone, reducing cancer cell growth, and keeping our immune system functioning normally. When we get a good amount of Vitamin D, our bones and teeth grow and develop and we have even better resistance against certain diseases. When you don’t have enough Vitamin D, our bones can become very thin, easy to break, or even misshapen.
- Some studies have shown that Vitamin D might play an important role in helping us regulate our mood and avoiding depression. No wonder sunshine makes so many of us here at KJ so happy!
- Last but not least, Vitamin D has been shown to boost weight loss. If you are paying extra close attention to your diet and are working to improve your weight, consider adding Vitamin D supplements to your regimen. Scientists said that the extra Vitamin D can have an appetite-suppressing effect.
