How Kortni Picks Patterns
From pattern mixing to matchy-matchy and color-blocking to patterns with solids, Kortni Jeane swimmers are made to mix + match! Some of you were asking about my creative process when picking out the patterns + colors that come alive in our swimmers. Today I’m giving the crew what they want! Take a look at some of the steps I take to bring the patterns + colors you know and love to life!

I am constantly pulling inspiration from everywhere, mainly everyday life honestly. I love watching the world around me - people, buildings, landscapes, textures, food, etc. There are beautiful, bright, and fun things all around and they all inspire me to create new patterns + use new colors. Traveling is also a huge inspiration for me {when can we go again?!}

I create mood boards for each pattern I have in mind. Think of it like a vision board, but an idea commonly used in fields like interior design, fashion, and graphic design. Mood boards are so much more than curating your Pinterest board {but who doesn’t love a good Pinterest board?} They help me brainstorm ideas in a way that saves me time and energy as well as help my ideas take on new life.

I select colors I’d like to see different patterns in. This is a fun part. I read somewhere that there are 10 million colors that exist in the world, and I love to choose my favorites from such a large selection.

I work hand in hand with graphic designers + artists to bring my ideas to life. As many business owners know, it takes a village to make ideas come to life. I’m completely inspired by the creative people I am surrounded by so I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I go back + forth several times {many many times} once the initial design is made to make tweaks on sizing, placement, details, coloring, etc. Behind the scenes isn’t always a linear process - there’s a lot of back and forth when you’re creating something new. You know the phrase “back to the drawing board,” only instead of starting over, we’re just making the design better and better with every tweak.

I send design to be printed on actual fabric. I wait in anticipation as new + fresh fabrics are being created far from our warehouse to see if the printers can bring my vision to life!

Once fabric is received, we make more tweaks + fabric samples until it looks just right! We’re far from perfect but do all we can to make sure the prints + colors are on point and the quality top notch! We don’t stop tweaking until we’re satisfied that our print/color is the best it can be!

Well there you have it! I never know how you will react to my new patterns + colors when they launch and am completely overwhelmed each time by the wonderful response I receive! So much time is put into creating each line. It takes me months, sometimes even years, for my designs to be finalized. When it finally comes time to share it with the world I get so nervous, hoping you love it as much as I do and I appreciate all the support and shockingly wonderful response I get with each launch! So from the bottom of my heart, thank you!
